Scroll zkEVM Beginner's Guide

This article will introduce beginners to how to interact with L2 Dapps, using Scroll zkEVM as an example. We will demonstrate the entire process using an on-chain tic-tac-toe game. These skills can theoretically be applied to any layer two network.

Preparation: Install Wallet

If you haven't installed Metamask or similar crypto wallets yet, please complete the installation first. Metamask is a popular choice and can be downloaded from the official website for your browser or mobile device.

Step 1: Configure Test Network

Scroll zkEVM has currently launched its alpha testnet, which is a layer two network compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). It is currently connected to the Ethereum Goerli testnet. You need to add these two networks to your wallet:

  1. Visit the official Scroll website and follow the instructions to add the Scroll L2 network to your wallet.
  2. Also ensure to add the Goerli test network.

Step 2: Obtain Goerli Test ETH

You need some Goerli test network ETH to proceed with the subsequent operations. There are several faucets to obtain free test ETH:

  1. The faucet provided by Alchemy allows you to receive 0.2 ETH each time.
  2. A faucet based on proof of work that can provide more ETH.
  3. The Paradigm faucet requires Twitter login.

Select one or more faucets to obtain enough test ETH.

Step 3: Bridge ETH to Scroll L2

After obtaining Goerli test ETH, the next step is to transfer a portion of it to the Scroll L2 test network:

  1. Go to the Scroll bridging interface.
  2. Transfer ETH to your address on Scroll L2 as instructed on the page.

Please note that this process may take some time to complete.

Step 4: Experience the On-chain Tic-Tac-Toe Game

You can now try playing tic-tac-toe on Scroll L2:

  1. Visit the game website and connect your wallet.
  2. To create a new game, you need to add the opponent's address (which can be a friend's or another wallet address of yours).
  3. Select the game you created from the game list to start playing.

This game has a special feature: if you make a mistake or don't want to lose the game, you can reset at any time.

Step 5 (Optional): Explore More Dapps

If you want to try more decentralized applications and games on Scroll, you can visit Scroll's Dapps showcase page, where there are more interesting projects waiting for you to explore.

By following the above steps, you can successfully start using Scroll zkEVM and interact with L2 Dapps. This will not only help you understand how layer 2 networks operate but also allow you to experience the innovative applications brought by blockchain technology.

You can also trade on the Testnet; if you don't lose, you gain.
