Scroll zkEVM Getting Started Guide

This article will introduce beginners to how to interact with L2 decentralized applications (Dapps). We will use Scroll zkEVM as an example to explore how to start using the platform and interact with Ethereum L2 Dapps. The skills discussed here theoretically apply to other layer two networks as well. To better illustrate this, we will use an on-chain tic-tac-toe game running on the Scroll L2 network as an example.

Preparation: Install Wallet

If you have already installed a cryptocurrency wallet like Metamask, you can skip this step. If not, please install the appropriate wallet application according to your device type.

Step 1: Configure Test Network

Scroll zkEVM has currently launched its alpha testnet. As a Layer 2 network compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), it allows smart contracts written on Ethereum to be directly deployed on Scroll zkEVM. The Scroll L2 alpha testnet is currently connected to the Ethereum Goerli test network. This means that the Scroll L2 network will send batch transactions to the Goerli L1 network for final confirmation.

To set up the Scroll L2 network, please visit its official website and follow the instructions to add the network to your wallet. At the same time, if you haven't added the Goerli network yet, please add it as well.

Step 2: Obtain test ETH

After completing the network setup, you need to obtain some Goerli testnet ETH from a faucet. There are multiple faucets available, each with different features and limitations. You can choose one or more faucets to get enough test ETH.

Step 3: Bridge ETH to Scroll L2

After obtaining Goerli testnet ETH, the next step is to bridge some ETH to the Scroll L2 testnet. Visit the bridging interface of Scroll and follow the instructions on the page to transfer ETH to your address on the Scroll L2 testnet. Please note that this process may take some time to complete.

Step 4: Experience the On-Chain Tic-Tac-Toe Game

After the transfer is complete, you can try the on-chain tic-tac-toe game. Visit the game webpage, connect your wallet, and create a new game. Since this is a multiplayer game, you need to add another player's address. After creating the game, select your game from the list to start.

This game has another interesting feature: if you make a mistake at any step or don't want to lose the game, you can reset the game at any time.

Step Five (Optional): Explore More Scroll L2 Applications

If you are interested in experiencing more decentralized applications on Scroll, you can visit its official website for more options.

By following the steps above, you can start exploring Scroll zkEVM and other L2 solutions. As technology continues to evolve, these platforms will bring more scalability and innovative opportunities to the Ethereum ecosystem.
