Scroll zkEVM Beginner's Guide

This article introduces beginners to how to interact with L2 decentralized applications (Dapps). We will use Scroll zkEVM as an example to explore how to get started with this layer two network and interact with Ethereum L2 Dapps. The skills learned in this guide can theoretically be applied to any other layer two network. To illustrate specifically, we will use an on-chain tic-tac-toe game running on the Scroll L2 network as an example.

Preparation: Install a cryptocurrency wallet

If you have already installed a crypto wallet, you can skip this step. Otherwise, please select and install the appropriate crypto wallet based on your browser or mobile device.

Step 1: Set up the Scroll L2 Testnet and Goerli Testnet

Scroll zkEVM has currently launched its alpha testnet. This is a layer 2 network that is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine ( EVM ), meaning that smart contracts written for the Ethereum network can be deployed on Scroll zkEVM using the same tools. The Scroll L2 alpha testnet is currently connected to the Goerli test network of Ethereum L1. This enables the Scroll L2 network to batch send transactions to the Goerli L1 network for final confirmation.

You can visit the official Scroll website and follow the instructions to add the Scroll L2 network and Goerli network to your crypto wallet.

Step 2: Get Goerli Testnet ETH

After completing the network setup, you need to obtain some Goerli ETH from a faucet. There are multiple faucets to choose from, each with slightly different methods and amounts for obtaining. You can choose one or combine several to get enough test ETH.

Step 3: Transfer ETH from Goerli to Scroll L2

The next step is to transfer a portion of Goerli ETH to the Scroll L2 testnet. You can complete this operation using the bridging interface provided by Scroll. Follow the instructions on the page to transfer ETH to your address on the Scroll L2 testnet. Please note that this process may take some time to complete.

Step 4: Experience the On-Chain Tic-Tac-Toe Game

Once your ETH is successfully transferred to Scroll L2, you can start experiencing the on-chain tic-tac-toe game. Visit the game webpage, connect your wallet, and create a new game. Since this is a multiplayer game, you will need to add your friends' addresses or use your second wallet as an opponent.

After creating the game, select your game from the list, and you can start playing Tic-Tac-Toe on the chain. This game also has an interesting feature: if you make a wrong move or don't want to lose the game, you can reset the game at any time.

Step 5 (Optional): Explore Other Dapps on Scroll L2

If you want to try more decentralized applications and games on Scroll, you can visit the official Dapps list page provided by Scroll, where there are more interesting projects waiting for your exploration.

With this beginner's guide, you should be able to start operating and experiencing on Scroll zkEVM. As you become more familiar with this ecosystem, I believe you will discover more interesting applications and opportunities. Wishing you an enjoyable exploration in the Web3 world!

The essence of Scroll lies in executing zk-SNARKs verification of the execution stack, but this reduction process lacks a cryptographic security proof.
