Durov, the founder of Telegram, has been investigated by the French judiciary for a number of serious crimes

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has recently been formally investigated by the French judiciary. The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office issued a statement listing a number of crimes that Durov is suspected of, including illegal transactions, refusal to cooperate with judicial surveillance, participation in the dissemination of illegal content, money laundering and undeclared crypto services.

Specifically, Durov's alleged crimes include:

  1. Assisting in the management of online platforms that promote organized illegal trading can result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros.

  2. Refuse to provide the necessary information or documents for lawful surveillance when requested by the competent authority.

  3. Engaging in multiple illegal activities, including disseminating programs or data used to attack automated data processing systems, organizing the distribution of child pornography, drug trafficking, organized fraud, and participating in criminal gangs.

  4. Money laundering suspected of organizing a crime or offence.

  5. Provide encryption services with confidentiality functions, but do not make a declaration of compliance.

  6. Providing and importing encryption means without prior necessary declaration.

The allegations range from technology crimes to societal harms, reflecting the intense scrutiny of digital platforms by law enforcement. As the founder of Telegram, Durov's actions are considered likely to pose a threat to public safety and law and order.

This incident has sparked discussions about the balance between digital platform responsibility, user privacy protection, and law enforcement needs. As the investigation deepens, both the tech and legal communities will closely monitor the progress of the case and its potential implications.
