The new chairman of the Ethereum Foundation takes office, emphasizing the philosophy of subtraction and community culture.
Ethereum Foundation Welcomes New Leadership, Future Development Direction Draws Attention
Recently, the Ethereum Foundation (EF) announced significant personnel changes. Executive Director Aya Miyagotchi has officially been promoted to the position of Chair of the Foundation. Miyagotchi subsequently published an article outlining her plans and vision for the future development of the Ethereum Foundation.
Miyagotchi stated in the article that she will end her role as Executive Director and take on the new position of Chair of the Foundation. This transition will enable her to continue supporting EF's institutional relationships and to broaden the Foundation's vision and cultural impact. She is filled with gratitude and enthusiasm for the future and mentioned that this decision was made a year ago.
Reflecting on the events of the past few weeks, Miyagotchi believes that the deeper meaning of Ethereum has been highlighted. When network performance or the market value of ETH sparks controversy, the true value of Ethereum becomes clearer. Globally, enthusiasm for discussions about Ethereum is soaring, and this level of attention is Ethereum's greatest advantage: it belongs to everyone and is not controlled by any single entity. Ethereum's permissionless culture not only tolerates differences but becomes stronger through them.
Miyagotchi borrowed Stewart Brand's theory of "Pace Layering" to explain her views on Ethereum. She believes that if Ethereum is to be integrated into the world structure long-term, rather than just being a short-term product, it needs to develop at different speeds across various layers. The role of the Ethereum Foundation is not to control or own all domains within Ethereum, but to uphold the core values of Ethereum.
When discussing the working principles of the Ethereum Foundation, Miyagotchi emphasized the importance of the "subtractive philosophy." This is not merely simple minimalism, but a result-oriented subtractive design thinking. Through this approach, the Ethereum Foundation has facilitated the emergence of new projects, new organizations, and new talents, while maintaining Ethereum's limitless potential and uncontrollable nature.
Miyagotchi also listed a series of specific measures to demonstrate how EF can influence Ethereum's development and infrastructure without control. These measures include managing core development conference calls, advocating for client diversity, and supporting research and development interoperability workshops, among others. She specifically mentioned the success of the merge and the transition to PoS, considering it an almost impossible task that requires maintaining a delicate balance between leadership and coordination.
When discussing events such as Devcon and Devconnect, Miyagotchi emphasized the importance of cultivating community leadership. She believes these events reflect the true essence of Ethereum: an independent yet interconnected community network, where each community contributes to the whole.
Miyagotchi also proposed the idea that EF must continuously evolve, but emphasized that this development should not be like traditional companies. The goal of EF is not to "win" for itself, but to achieve long-term victory for Ethereum while adhering to its core values. She encourages the team to keep this principle in mind during their work, always guided by the maintenance of Ethereum's integrity and values.
Reflecting on her seven years since joining EF, Miyagotchi stated that witnessing the growth of the ecosystem is a truly magical experience. She believes that the true resilience of Ethereum is rooted in its values, and she likens Ethereum to an "infinite garden" that becomes stronger because of its biodiversity.
Finally, Miyagotchi expressed her gratitude to those who have supported her over the past seven years and emphasized the importance of culture in the development of Ethereum. She believes that culture far exceeds market cycles, supporting the ecosystem through the winter and driving it to welcome the arrival of spring.
This article by Miyagotchi not only outlines her vision for the future of the Ethereum Foundation but also reflects the core values and development philosophy of the Ethereum community. As the new chairperson, she will continue to nurture Ethereum's unique culture and work to bridge the gap between Ethereum and the broader global community.
