Russia restricts Telegram and WhatsApp for non-compliance with regulations.
Russia has restricted voice calls on Telegram and WhatsApp since August 11, accusing the two platforms of not complying with domestic laws, including support for fraud and terrorism investigations. Calls on Telegram are almost paralyzed, WhatsApp has distorted audio, while messages and other features have not been affected. Roskomnadzor asserts that this is a "crime-fighting" measure and no other restrictions are imposed.
The move is part of the strategy of "digital sovereignty" after Russia tightened internet control since the Ukraine conflict in 2022, requiring data storage platforms to be located in Russia, removing "illegal" content, and opening local offices. The government is also developing a messaging application integrated with government services, but human rights advocates are concerned that this tool will increase surveillance. Some regions have even experienced internet cuts or slowdowns, raising concerns over restrictions on access to independent information.
