On June 6, according to Cointelegraph, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis reported that a donation of 300 bitcoins (worth about $31 million) received by Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht earlier this month is suspected to have come from a wallet related to Alphabay, a dark web marketplace. The analysis revealed that donors used a variety of hybrid services to hide traces of transactions, and that funding may have originated from Alphabay's early suppliers. Blockchain detective ZachXBT confirmed that the funds did not come from Silk Road, but its transaction pattern suggests that illegal sources may be involved. Alphabay was the successor to Silk Road, operating from 2014 to 2017 before being shut down during Operation Bayonet. Notably, Ulbricht received a full pardon from President Trump in January after serving a 12-year prison sentence for running Silk Road.
